The Pillars of Game Design
Games, like all artistic categories, can be very subjective when deciding on what’s good. While tastes vary, a little critical thinking goes a long way throughout the design process. Mike Richie discusses several “pillars” of game design that apply to tabletop and digital markets. Common pitfalls and how to avoid them are discussed followed by an open round table style Q & A session.

Creating a Thriving Game Development Community in the Heart of Appalachia
Having taught game development at a small community college in West Virginia for nearly 9 years, convincing the region that making video games can be a real job hasn't been easy. Two Scoop Games, 20 game jams later
Over the past 4 years, Two Scoop Games has participated in 20 game jams including; 8 Ludum Dares, 5 Global Game Jams, 5 local jams, 3 solo jams, a Flappy Jam, a cooking themed jam, and even a game jam that took place on a train from Chicago to San Francisco.

Each jam we set out with the same goal as everyone else; create a game based on a theme in (usually) a weekend, but we also give ourselves our own constraints and learning goals.

I will briefly walk through a selection of our jam games and talk about what we set out to do, what we were able to accomplish, and what we learned along the way that improved our game dev skills and abilities.

Beyond Ageism: Designing Games that appeal to an older demographic
Are you interested in developing games for many millions of gaming retirees? This talk discusses the findings from a decade of academic research on the topic and has some surprising findings. Most importantly, it concludes that older gamers are less interested in game design that is focused on brain training and physical exercise than popular media would have you believe, and it introduces a series of design guidelines that you can use to make your games appeal to an older audience.

Gamedev FUNDamentals
This talk is similar to the talk I gave last year, but with the social media and press bits stripped out to give more time to the funding bits. This time around I plan on going more in-depth about business plans, types of small businesses (and the strengths and weaknesses of each), the basics of grant applications, crowdfunding (something I didn’t touch on at all last time), angel investors, and about creating a strategic team to help your studio start, and grow.
